Barnabas is the fifth born in a family of eight children. He has four brothers and three sisters. Being unemployed, his parents grow a few crops like corn and beans on a small piece of land to feed the family. The family is at the risk of starving especially in times of drought.  The mother wishes that Barnabas and the siblings will attend school and live a better life when they grow up.
