Derrick is born in a family of seven children; four girls and three boys him being the third born. He has never experienced any parental love in his life. His father was an alcoholic who at one time drunk too much and died. Derrick and his siblings remained with their mother who abandoned them and ran off with another man whom she got married to. She cares less about her children and only concentrates on the new family she got. Derrick now stays with his grandmother who took him in and tries to provide for him. Regardless of how much she tries, she still fails because she is too old and weak to do heavy work. Derricks urgent need is tuition so that he can go through with school in order to work towards his dream of being a teacher.
