Ivan is the first born of the four children in his family having two brothers and one sister.  He stays with both his parents who care for him but incapable of providing for most of his basic necessities.  They are peasants who grow a few crops on a small piece of land basically for food.  They sometimes sell off the harvest to earn some money to help them meet most of the children’s necessities.  They find difficulty in paying for their tuition. Ivan is a very hard working boy who loves school so much.
