Ivan, the fourth born in his family, has 3 sisters and 1 brother.  He stays with both his parents in a 2 roomed house made of mud and bamboo.  The parents engage in peasantry farming and mainly grow beans & maize.  The harvest is used for food and sometimes a little is reserved for sale.  The family’s source of income isn’t reliable thus the head of the family finds a lot of hardship in maintaining the entire family.  Ivan is one of the many children who are often sent back home for tuition.  This in turn affects his academic performance yet he is a very hardworking boy who shows a lot of interest in his studies.
