James is the sixth born of the six children in his family who are all boys.  When he was growing up, he used to see his parents argue every now and then till they decided to separate.  His mother left so he and his siblings remained with their father who married another woman.  James’ aunt leaves nearer to the school than his father so they both decided that James should stay with the aunt during school time.  During holidays, James stays with his father.  Both James’ aunt and father who are peasants try to provide for James’ necessities.  They can only afford feeding him on a daily basis and may be buying some few clothes for him.  They find most difficulty in paying for his tuition yet they believe that education is the best gift they could ever give him.
