Joyce lives in a rural community of Lugazi. It is located in the Mityana District in Western Uganda. Joyce has four brothers, one sister with she being the fifth child. Her parents are unemployed and are small-scale farmers who grow crops on their piece of property for food. Three of Joyce’s siblings dropped out of school because their parents could not afford to pay their school tuition and purchase the needed school supplies. Joyce loves studying and is an average performer.  She often misses school because her tuition is not paid by her parents.  After school, Joyce helps her mom with household chores like washing dishes, collecting water from the well and sweeping around the house.
