Steven is the third born of the five children in his family; five boys and one girl.  He stays with his mother and siblings.  His father died.  This left the responsibility of providing for the entire family to the mother.  She is a peasant who is hired by other people in the same village to labor on their pieces of land and she is paid a little money thereafter.  The income earned is always little insufficient to meet most of the children’s necessities.  Steven loves school so much and he often emerges as one of the best students.
