Arafat is the fifth born of the six children in his family with 3 girls and 3 boys.  He stays with his mother who is a peasant. His father left the family to fend for themselves when he married another woman. He now lives with his new family elsewhere. His mother earns a living by tailoring for others who need repairs. However, what she earns is not sufficient to care for her children’s basic necessities like shelter and medical care. Sponsorship has helped him to stay in school and pursue an education.
