Bernard is the sixth born in the family of eight children. He has four brothers and three sisters.  Bernard stays with both his peasant parents who depend on subsistence farming for food. On a lucky season, the surplus harvest is sold off to meet the other necessities like clothing, and medical care. Bernard is a passionate young boy who loves school.
